Asus has just announced the launch of the all new ROG Phone 5 series to the world. Along with the standard version of the ROG Phone 5, the company also released the ROG Phone 5 Pro and the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate Edition. Both Special Editions give players an added edge with extra buttons and also come with a few other cool features. However, the basis of all three smartphones remains the same.
ROG Phone 5 is a smartphone designed for gamers. But that doesn’t mean that it’s not suitable for regular smartphone users. A good example of this would be, a Ferrari is built for the tracks, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shop in one.
Let’s start with unboxing. The packaging of the ROG Phone 5 itself looks quite premium. While the phone itself is the exciting part here, the company is shipping the phone with a bunch of stickers to increase the excitement among gamers. They also added an Aero Case which not only makes the phone cool but also provides great thermal management.
Apart from that, the box contains a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB Type-C power brick, which provides 30W of output. Finally, the box contains a stylish SIM eject PIN code, which you don’t want to lose.
As for the gaming smartphone itself, the ROG Phone 5 comes with a 6.78-inch Super AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 800 nits and HDR + support. The panel is from Samsung, which helps it deliver a great content consuming experience. The display also boasts 111% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, 300Hz touch sampling rate, and 24.3ms touch latency.
ROG Phone 5 comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, along with an overclocked Adreno 660 GPU. The company claims that this combination offers 35% better performance compared to the last generation of ROG Phone. The handset comes with up to 12 GB of RAM on the standard model and up to 18 GB of RAM if you go for the ultimate edition.
This time around, the company also brought back the 3.5mm headphone jack. With this, many gamers will rejoice as they can finally use their favorite pro-level headphones with the ROG Phone 5.
Under the hood, the ROG Phone 5 gets a massive 6000mAh battery. In order to make charging and battery usage more efficient, the company has used a MMT design consisting of two 3000mAh batteries which provides several advantages. As well as offering a lower charging temperature, it also supports 65W fast charging. However, the company shipped the smartphone with a 30W fast charging brick.
I got my hands on the ROG Phone 5 for a few hours and couldn’t really test it thoroughly. But first impressions tell me the phone is going to be a beast and set a benchmark for all future Android smartphones. We will be releasing the full review shortly.
