Samsung teases future memory standards

The world of PC hardware never stops. At Samsung’s recent Tech Day 2021, the company showcased some of the tech coming to gaming PCs in the next few years.

DDR5 is barely making waves in the market, thanks to a virtually non-existent supply, but Samsung is already well into the development of desktop DDR6 and LPDDR6 for mobile applications. Although JEDEC is the body that sets memory standards and the actual specification has yet to be defined, much of the underlying work is already underway.

As reported by Computer baseSamsung estimates that DDR6 should reach around 12,800 MT / s, which is double the 6,400 MT / s of today’s high-end DDR5 memory. Over time, Samsung expects to be able to achieve overclocked speeds of 17,000 MT / s or more. There has been no discussion of latencies, but if DDR5 latencies are any indicator, a DDR6-12800 kit could end up with an LC of 100. This is, however, only speculation, as DDR6 is. several years from launch.

Samsung also talked a bit about GDDR7 memory, which you can expect to use with future graphics cards. It should reach more than 32 Gbit / s of speed. This compares to the current fasting GDDR6X at 21 Gbps. However, it looks like GDDR7 is still several years away from its debut, as Samsung is working on GDDR6 + in the meantime. He expects GDDR6 + to be able to operate at up to 27 Gbps. GDDR6 + is highly likely to debut with high-end graphics cards Ada Lovelace from Nvidia and RDNA3 from AMD, if we don’t see them on professional cards first.

Regarding business cards, future examples should be equipped with HBM3 memory. Samsung is working on 24 GB chips with a transfer rate of 6.4 GT / s. Although the cost and complexity of HBM3 means that you are unlikely to see it on your next-gen gaming GPU.

There won’t be any GDDR6 memory or GDDR7 graphics cards on sale on Black Friday, but you might be able to get a good deal on a DDR4 set, even if a DDR5 deal seems unlikely. Check out our constantly updated Black Friday deals page if you’re looking for a bargain.
